Category: Experiences Living In a Logging Camp

Running Away From Home

I guess one of the earlier memories was of my brother and I running away from home.   As far as we can figure, we were only around 5/6 years of age.

A  little blanket,  a bb gun,  matches and a knife  is about all that we remember taking.  We slept out for two nights.  We used up most of our bbs trying to bring down a grouse (a type of large bird) that was perched in a tree.  My brother finally got a robin.  We plucked and cleaned it and cooked it over an open fire.  Let me tell you, there is not much to eat on a robin!  Fortunately, there were an abundance of different types of berries.

After the 2nd night we pondered about ever returning home but finally figured that everyone must be very worried so we returned.

What a surprise we got.  Not a single word was mentioned about us even being away so it wasn’t even worth being gone!  We both still get a big laugh out of that one.

The Life & Times

I was raised in a logging camp and lived in a “float house”.  As our mother and father were very busy with work, us childr5en had a lot of time to explore many things.

As there was no school in the camp, when I became of age, I went to live with my grandmother in the Okanagan Valley and returned “home” during the summer.  What fun we had!

As children living in a logging camp, we had many occasions to experience things that most our age would never have had.  Firstly, let me explain the house we lived in.  It was quite large by yesterdays standards as you can see by the picture below.  It sat on huge big logs that were tied together with boom chains and very heavy cable.  I am still looking for a good picture of our house on the logs but the one below will give you some idea.

As my father was in the logging business, when one logging claim was finished, the whole camp was towed to a new area.  One of my most favorite place was Boughey Bay which is located in Havannah Channel between Vancouver Island and the mainland.   Unfortunately, as with many children, certain words meant totally different things so when I was asked where I lived, I would tell them “On an Island” because I didn’t want to say Boughey!

It was a pristine area with so much wild life, a lovely river, oodles of huckleberry and salmon berries in the spring.  We had many experiences while living in this area.  I shall elaborate on a few at a later time.

I sure hope you are looking forward to reading or maybe even listening to some of our many adventures.
